Back from a Short trip out to Sea of Japan
Our Ship was able to get underway last week only to find something not working well with the equipment. It was a ’shake down’ cruise; I guess….a voyage a ship takes to get all its equipment in order. We had left Yokohama, Japan on a good day with light winds and ventured out to a designated area which took about a day. Once the ship got out further out to sea, that is where the seas ‘picked up’ and grew larger, about 8-10ft.
It turned out that at 2am the first night, the ship rolled from a large wave hitting its side and I had been ‘flung’ out of my bed!! as the ship took a 30-35 degree List. I only got bruised from landing into my desk, nothing major (hehe)…but boy was it a ride from there on. I didn’t get to sleep ’till 5am. The real damage was from all the food and supplies which were tossed in the Galley and elsewhere. It wasn’t the 2nd Mate’s fault (he was on Watch at the time and got battered), but he was very embarrassed, as well as concerned.
It was a good opportunity for me, as well, to get back into the ’swing of things’ and fine-tune my navigation/piloting(within congested waters) skills.
Traffic in the seas off of Japan was incredible. Imagine two supertankers coming right at ya, with only .2-.5 tenths of a mile to spare. I felt like a kitten being run down by two pitbulls and more where that came from. This is where my money’s worth comes into play.
We returned to Japan after being out for only a few days, and will stay here, until further notice.
Ciao for now,
- Nadir
