Adjusting to Life onboard….

Vol.2 No2
At Sea
These past few days we had set out for sea and it has become increasingly hotter.

I had substituted a sub-freezing climate when I flew out to meet the ship for a more tropical feel. The weather is currently at a sweltering 78 degrees with about 85 percent humidity! It looks like It will be a long, hot Summer , for me, this year.
Most of the crew, but not the Military detachment (Mildet), wears shorts and t-shirts or short sleeved shirts for work. There is a dress-code for the Officers and a Khaki colored pants or shorts with a AMSEA Polo shirt is required while on Watch. At least, I won’t be getting a lot of my other clothes dirty with this rule.
The Chief Mate and I have been working on small jobs during my Overtime. Overtime is around the hours of 1:00p-5:00p for me. Apart from some Inspections, I will be working to do light maintenance or other menial tasks. The Inspections on this ship, are primarily done by two of the three Third Mates.
I also have not been feeling well as I’ve contracted some virus-probably from back home. I have congestion and headaches but I’ve been taking some medication and lozenges for my soar throat.
The interaction between the Military and Crew is a special one. Although we don’t necessarily share job responsiblities, we do become involved in their operations in some form or another.
During meals, I’ve had the opportunity of meeting some of the Lieutenants and other Officers In Charge (OIC) and they seem to be a very relaxed and pleasant group. We are blessed to have a team of Doctors, which consist of a Surgeon, Anthesiologist, ICU Nurse, ect. Normally we wouldn’t have such a group but, due to the nature of the “Mission”, they are required.
It has only been a week, but I am missing the freedom of being able to take drives and visit family and friends. But, the Snow…I don’t miss. Ha! You wouldn’t have thought that saying would ever come from me. Years and years, I would always wish it would snow, and now…the snow is good, but a milder, warmer climate is better. Ok, maybe a snow that would fall then melt real quick would be ideal! Have a Great Day!
