Out to sea with a new Chief Mate aboard!
Vol. 2, No 15
AT SEA
We are out to sea after having a brief “port-of-call”. A switch of Chief Mates and one Third Mate and then heading back to sea.
Life is back to normal, floating on the deep blue sea. My Watch schedule will be changing in a couple weeks, though, as we have three third mates, will be rotating out of Watch and into the “daywork” positions on alternating weeks. Each one will be given a week to work twelve-hours on deck. Currently, the older third mate, Richard “Sheriff”, is working on deck. His aptitude and determination has foundered. He seems to be quite tired and is frustrating the new Chief Mate who isn’t impressed. Richard wasn’t sharp on Watch, either, but they are giving him a chance on the Bridge. We’ll see how it goes.
Our communications have been down for nearly five days! Something went wrong at the command, back on land, apparently! So- I am back and happy to hear from you. Sorry if it frightened some of you that I was silent for over four days!
I know this is a short Journal but I am slowly getting into a new routine with this Chief Mate and have to impress, in order to “Shine”. Many eyes are watching as I go about my daily business, ya know!
As a third mate, I am at the bottom of the deck officers list but I can get away with making small mistakes. I feel like a glorified “Able Seaman” but I think I am managing well this first week with the new “mate”. Already, I am organizing the three Damage Control Lockers that have been in disarray for awhile- this is my project I have been working on these past few days, for overtime.
I am counting the weeks left and it seems there are six and a half weeks to go!
Have a great day!
