A job, A job!???

In an apparent emergency call that prompted a brief frenzy of excitement in my house, a shipping company had called me in search of a relief third mate for a position on a ship, early this morning- Sunday!

Here I was, entertaining the in-laws with a homemade breakfast of pancakes, fruits, with jam preserves on a morning where frigid,single-digit temperatures were present just a few feet from the comforts, inside…when a call came in!A very rare situation to occur on a weekend,as most companies offer jobs within a typical Monday-thru-Friday work week. However, the excitement subsided as I wasn’t able to answer the phone to respond to the desperate sounding personnel director, quick enough! My lack of response time proved that luck wasn’t on my side this time, as the personnel coordinator for Inter Ocean, the same company that offered me the job on the PETERSBURG just seven months ago, found another suitable deck officer to fill the Third Mate position for the short, two week job. Anxiety was soon replaced with the feeling of a loss- much like what an angler feels when the ‘big one’ gets away after reeling in a fish!
Yet, if I had been offered the job and everything had gone my way, I would have had to fly out quickly to the Westcoast, in order to be at the ship by the following morning by first thing, on Monday!
How quickly things turn around in the industry!
