Latest News-position wanted!
As my number on the union job list has dwindled to an impressive ‘Eleven’, a potential job has surfaced!
I noticed a Third Mate position is needed for the Tanker, PAUL BUCK. It’s a 4 month or 120 day contract (Mariners speak in days) and interestingly, the ship’s mission may be one of particular mention. There’s no other deck (officer) position at this time, and I’ve inquired on the availability of the job. Apparently, one other person is being considered so I’m an alternate.
You see, the PAUL BUCK has proudly taken part in Operation Deep Freeze for many years. This mission is a replenishment of different types of fuels to help the people of the Antarctic Continent! The southern most convergence of land mass, albeit frozen, has been the focus of needed supply for the multitude of scientists and researchers that have settled themselves in the most barren region in all the world.
Only a selected group of ships, which have had their hulls designed specifically for the elements, are eligible for the transit south. And this government contracted vessel has had its hull strengthened, and special heaters installed onto the pipes that are exposed on deck, for purposes to allow the continuous flow of its precious cargo. Gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel are in demand as many forms of transportation are required to sustain daily operation in Antarctica!
This job assignment as a Third Mate, has been requested for around the first week of April, to fly out and meet the ship in the states, I would imagine.
Wish me luck, as this would be the first shipping assignment of its kind, for me.
Have a great day!
