At Sea, En Route to Lake Charles, LA

We have finished another round of deliveries to Tampa and are enjoying a couple of days of transit to the load out facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Tampa seems to be a nuisance as we visit three docks in less than two days. Although the act of discharging cargo isn’t so bad, as we split the parcel of up to four types of cargo between docks, the hassles of shifting between docks and having to undock and then dock again, is what’s annoying. Navigation and the art of “conning” or commanding a vessel is perfected over time and only this hands on training can hone one’s skills and fine tune a mariner’s instinct upon the water, hopefully without incident, of course!
Skills used in navigating a 38,000 ton ship, involve decision making and time management skills not unlike what a pilot experiences onboard an airline jet. [Read more →]
Lake Charles, LA - Alongside Citgo Dock
I am writing to you as we sit along the dock, fully loaded with cargo destined for Tampa, Florida awaiting orders to set sail. We received word last night to push back our Departure until this morning, as a result of weather concerns further down the Calcasieu River. No word,though, on a Pilot even though I have the VHF radio set to Channel 66 and keeping a close ear from Vessel Traffic Information.

Well Folks, In approximately eight days, I shall be heading home!
My seventy-five days of working is quickly coming to an end. The ship has established a continual loading and discharge schedule between the Gulf of Mexico and shall endure this schedule throughout most of next year. [Read more →]
We were delayed for awhile back in Lake Charles, LA while loading cargo. Apparently, some Regular Unleaded gasoline via a storage tank was the culprit and a new batch was ordered, to the tune of some 4.5 million gallons. In the end, we managed to Depart late on November the 1st as this delay cost us almost eighteen hours of valuable time. [Read more →]
