Under new command!

Captain Jeff Ritter is now in command of the SMT Chemical Explorer!

A seasoned mariner, Captain Ritter has loads of experience, especially as former captain on the sister-ship, the now “layed-up” Chemical Trader. A younger captain at forty-something, he has a medium build and appears with a fresh summer style short-sleeved comfort shirt and pressed jeans. He seems easy going with a calm and quiet voice, almost hushed, at times. Yet, the very first night while in Tampa, the captain ordered a dozen New York styled pizzas and presented the crew with a feast onboard. A great strategy; find something to get the unfamiliar crew to see that you care about them. Food works!

I find it’s always a challenge to work under a new senior officer, and a Captain is no exception. I’ve had to endure this challenge over the years, however, as I count almost thirty different captains, to date for whom I’ve had to serve under. All the little techniques and rules set forth by the off going, Captain Smith are now adopted or changed by Captain Ritter. In some cases, procedures are altered and instead of the previous captain taking charge, it lies on the hands of the junior officers, or vice versa. Imagine heading to work, proud as a peacock, only to witness the change of managers unfold and now you have to change your habits-and quickly. This much can give you indigestion. And similar to your very first day at school, under the watchful eye of the new fifth grade school teacher as she tested her pupils, checking on which ones she could trust, or keep a tightened leash. No telling what will set off this new captain or cause him to grin with appreciation. I cautiously do what I know and continue to behave with the utmost respect and follow the principles of good seamanship.

My Able Seaman, “LG” is back from his three week hiatus ashore for personal reasons. I’m actually much relieved by his return.

A bit more than three weeks to go, before I head home. The days unfold quickly and the cargo watches tick by at an alarming rate, it seems. Now, the shuddering of seams in the walls as they creak and loosened cabinet drawers squeak as we all settle into a slumber upon the rolling seas of the Gulf. We’ll look forward to Louisiana by Monday evening.

Have a great end of the weekend!
