Two weeks after the Mast (trip)!
Pardon the vernacular, but the time has flown since signing off this last trip!
Since returning home from the long and tedious time spent aboard the tanker, I’ve managed to make a trip out west to visit family. The trip to California brought together family and friends on Mother’s day with the tribute to togetherness and re-kindled friendship being the theme.
Much of my travels obviously keep me away from my friends and family for months on end, and the ability to establish avenues of correspondence is limited, as well. A face to face meeting is ideal and any opportunity for a quick flight to be reunited is most favorable. As it was, I’ve not seen my mentor and close friend Ang for over a year, and Keith, my high school friend for over fifteen years. Both graciously accepted the invitation to gather at my father and step mother’s rented flat within the serene and mature neighborhood of its northern mid-town region of Sacramento, California.
Here, amongst the aspiring and talented artistic bunch mixed with the covertly affluent and modest established crowd living side by side in historic old Victorian bungalows and converted four-plexes my family and friends all enjoyed a feast of barbequed chicken and fish while reveling such a gathering. The recently renewed vows between my father and step-mother along with my birthday were the motives of this meaningful fete.
Previous to this occasion, I enjoyed the relaxation of the San Francisco bay area with my wife, Michelle this past weekend. China town, fisherman’s wharf, and the various districts within the close proximity to the downtown region were investigated by yours truly. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect as a steady westerly breeze with clear skies enabled the locals to exhibit almost a selfish and “look-at-me” mentality. Whether it was a quick chat with a fireman who was swabbing the floor during the morning preparations of a busy day, or dropping in on a museum of ‘Beat’ memorabilia from the mid 1940’s-50’s ,exhibiting Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs thoughts; the people of this city by the bay,SF, seemed willing to share their stories with present day outsiders such as myself. But even after the legs were worn by the steep climb of neighboring hills and side streets and a day gone, a satisfied feel of accomplishment and warmth was felt by both Michelle and me. Togetherness and companionship was the theme of this eventful visit to California.
We shall do it again, soon!
