In the Month of May
A fruitful month as visits to California and approaching graduations are in the forecast.
The local blackbird family’s chicklings are leaving the nest and dropping one by one, just feet from my front door and from the comfort and safety of their miniature fortress onto the grass or playing field or airfield, which ever you might want to call the backdrop.. awaiting for their feathers to molt and sprout. Such a daring feat!
Along with weeding and small house management duties, my instinct for watching closely such a small breathing and frightful feather ball is among the list of chores or namely, responsibilities of mine, that my conscience says I must do. Their chirps like an alarm beacon unfortunately may give away their position to predators. I stand security Watch.
In other news, National Maritime Day, on May 22nd, which was proclaimed to be a day of remembrance for those who served during war and peace by merchant mariners was honored by President Obama as he expressed the concern for us and asked all US flagged ships to fly their Ensigns on that day. I was reading statistics from World War II that over seven thousand mariners gave their life as their ships transited the seas in order to carry valuable cargo and soldiers into battle. Only ten thousand Merchant Marine Veterans from World War II are alive today and have only recently been receiving the monthly one-thousand dollar stipend which they’ve deserved.
During this time of year in past years, I have mostly been at sea, therefore, a memo passed along by the union to remind us to hoist the ensign has been the only reminder of such a day.
But it’s been a nice change to have the pleasure of being home for the start of the Summer.
The too familiar snow has been replaced with blankets of sunshine as shaded trees with their leaves flutter in a calming breeze. This green color as my father reminded me growing up, is probably what he meant by pleasing to the eyes.
Well, I’ve managed to update my photo gallery with some newly posted photos from the trip to California. Also, some of you have posted some questions in the Discussions Forum which I have answered, as well. Any questions you have, feel free to post! Thanks for dropping in.
Have a great week!
