Thanks for the critique. From a person who's career stemmed (and still stemming I would imagine) from a journalistic and subjective nature, that means a lot. I've become seasick only a few times in the first six months of enduring twenty foot seas in the North Atlantic, but then became acclimated to the wrath the sea dealt.
I shall give you a holler soon!

Burko,
I work alongside many of the Seafarers International Union (SIU) Seamen as I am an American Maritime Officer Union Member (AMO) who contract with the same ships that they do. Their website is: seafarers.org. Since you have only an entry rating as Ordinary Seaman (OS)/Wiper/Food Handling (FH), this starts you out in all three departments in the beginning so you can decide where you want your career to take off. You will need to take a Physical on the guidelines of the Coast Guard, and take the Basic Safety and Training of Certificate in Watch keeping (STCW) to obtain your STCW certificate. This, of course is for 'deep sea' ships. Great Lake Freighters aren't required of STCW. Don't forget to quickly apply for the Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) as the deadline for such an ID is April 2009. You may not be able to enter port to sign aboard a ship without one. Here is the link:
https://twicprogram.tsa.dhs.gov/TWICWebApp/Privacy.do

I will be more than happy to guide you more so. Please email me by clicking on 'contact'.
Thanks for writing, Burko, and stay tuned for more journals in the near future!

What other mariner jobs (QMED) in your ship.? I'm a computer guy (Microsoft certified) with a Z card OS,Wiper, FH rating. How do I go about pursuing a career as a mariner? Do I join a Union Hall first?

The measurements are in nautical miles! I would seem to be a problem of dumping trash, while at sea. However, the notion is that paper, metals, and other decomposing substances when properly discarded, won't pose any threat to populated areas. In some 'special areas' such as The Mediterranean Sea or Great Lakes, no dumping is allowed and is enforced! All trash needs to be retained until next port.

And if ships were to have adequate storage of their garbage, then what you're asking about keeping garbage, onboard, until the next port, may be a viable option.

But can a ship traveling three weeks or longer between ports, be able to keep their trash for that long without having sanitation issues?

OK. Are the measurements done in "nautical" or "statute" miles. That would seem to make a difference, especially at 200 miles.

Regarding MARPOL, although it has always existed and will probably continue, I don't think there should be any international acceptance of "dumping" in the oceans. Carry your trash to the next port and pay to have is disposed of properly.

Limits such as 3 mile, 12 mile, and 200 mile are examples of jurisdictions set forth by countries, and states. These limits such as 12 mile, which predominantly before the twentieth century, used to be known as the "Three mile limit", establishes the 'Territorial Waters' or 'Contiguous Zone' that outlines the territory of each country followed by the 'Exclusive Economic Zone'(EEZ) at the 200 mile limits enabling countries to share boundaries for fishing. The European Union shares their boundaries for reasons to fish, whereas the United Kingdom and Iceland have disputes on their EEZ zones called the 'Cod Wars'. By the way,the United States has the largest EEZ zone at 4.3 million square miles.
Relating to Maritime laws, one way Merchant Marines abide by the rules of mile limits is due to Maritime Pollution Acts or MARPOL such as how far from land one can dispose of certain substances.
Choke points such as any Strait or Canal has set shipping lanes and enable passage of merchant ships without the worry of risk of crossing into territorial waters. Safe passages within these lanes are known as International Waters or anything beyond the 200 mile limit!

Hey Nate,

I keep reading about the "three mile limit," the "twelve mile limit," or the "200 mile limit" with respect to territorial waters. And what about territorial situations like the Straits of Gibraltar where Spain, Great Britain, and Morocco are within 27 miles of each other at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea?
