Thank you for your comments. It must be the leading edge of a component to the bridge of the vessel. You have a very good eye to see that. A couple other pics show what you mean by the vast nothingness of the Canal however, there are moments where there are scenic elements.

Hearing or reading about the Suez Canal has typically conjured up lines on a map for me. But not any more! Now I'll have the impressive visual image captured by your photo. The vantage point you must have from the bridge gives a great panorama. Is that a part of the ship at the lower left? You might want to crop or airbrish that out.
